Raised in India, Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the M S University, Vadodara and an MFA (painting) from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She borrows from traditional Tantric imagery and fuses it with Western social theory to create a new visual language that explores the classic themes of desire, conflict, struggle and transcendence. Bhatt’s work has been recently exhibited at the Museo Pedro de Osma (Peru), Walters Art Museum (USA), Die Monchskirche Museum (Germany), and The Station Museum of Contemporary Art (USA). She was a semi-finalist for the Janet & Walter Sondheim Award (2010) as well as the Joan Mitchell Award (2009). Her works are included in the collections of Marilyn Oshman, Sharon and Gus Kopriva, John and Berthe Ford, Nancy Kienholz and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art among others.
